What is a Forex VPS? The Complete Guide for Hong Kong Traders

Last updated: August 2026

If you run EAs, trade during news events, or simply want your MetaTrader terminal online 24/7 without leaving a computer on at home, a forex VPS is the standard solution. This guide explains what a forex VPS actually is, why latency matters more than most traders realise, and how to choose one — written specifically for traders in Hong Kong.

What is a forex VPS?

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a Windows computer that runs inside a professional data centre instead of your home. You connect to it from your own PC, phone or tablet using Remote Desktop (RDP), install or open your trading platform there, and then you can disconnect — the VPS keeps running your terminals and EAs around the clock.

A forex VPS is simply a VPS optimised for trading: MT4/MT5 pre-installed, stable low-latency network, and — critically — physically located near your broker's trading servers.

Diagram: how a forex VPS works — your devices connect via RDP to a Windows VPS in a Hong Kong data centre, which reaches the broker server in the same building in ~2ms
Your devices are just a remote control — the trading itself happens inside the data centre.

Why latency decides your execution

When you click buy, your order travels across the network to your broker's server. On home broadband, it passes through your ISP and multiple network hops — typically 100–300ms in Hong Kong, and worse during major news releases, exactly when price moves fastest. In that window, price can move away from you: that's slippage.

A colocated VPS removes almost the entire journey. When your VPS sits in the same data centre as the broker, orders travel metres instead of crossing the public internet — around 2 milliseconds. For scalping and news trading, that difference is often larger than the spread itself.

The fewer hops between you and your broker, the less can go wrong.

Who actually needs one?

EA / algorithmic traders

EAs must run continuously. A missed signal because your PC slept is a real cost. This is the single biggest reason traders move to a VPS.

Scalpers & news traders

When you're in and out within seconds, 200ms of latency is the difference between your price and a worse one.

Copy trading / signal followers

Signals execute on your account only while your terminal is online. A VPS keeps it online.

How to choose a forex VPS (5 things that matter)

1. Location, location, location

This outweighs everything else. A powerful VPS in the wrong city is slower than a modest one next to your broker. If your broker's servers are in Hong Kong (e.g. Vantage Markets, Ultima Markets), choose a Hong Kong VPS.

2. Measured latency, not promises

Ask for real measured latency to your specific broker, not a generic "low latency" claim.

3. Enough RAM for your terminals

Each MT4/MT5 terminal uses roughly 1GB with a few charts and EAs. 3GB comfortably runs 1-2 terminals; 6GB handles 3-5.

4. Windows + pre-installed platforms

MT4/MT5 are Windows software. A VPS with them pre-installed saves the entire setup.

5. Support in your language and timezone

When something breaks during Asian trading hours, support in your timezone — and in Cantonese — matters.

Trade from Hong Kong's data centre

fxVPS runs in Equinix HK1 with ~2ms verified latency to Hong Kong brokers. MT4/MT5 pre-installed, deployed in 15 minutes, from $14 first month.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to keep my computer on while using a VPS?

No — that's the point. The VPS runs independently in the data centre. Your computer is only needed when you want to check in or make changes.

Will a VPS improve my trading results?

A VPS improves execution — lower latency, less slippage, no downtime. It does not make a losing strategy profitable. Think of it as removing infrastructure problems from your trading, not as a strategy.

Is a Hong Kong VPS better than a cheaper US/EU VPS?

If your broker's servers are in Hong Kong or Asia, yes — decisively. An overseas VPS adds 150-250ms of latency, defeating the main purpose. Location beats price.

How do I start using a forex VPS?

Choose a plan, pay, and your VPS deploys automatically — with fxVPS the login details arrive by email within 15 minutes. Connect via Remote Desktop, log in to your broker account in the pre-installed MT4/MT5, attach your EAs, and disconnect.
