What is Forex VPS Latency? How Hong Kong Traders Measure MT4/MT5 Ping

Latency is the time between clicking buy and your broker receiving the order. On a Hong Kong home connection that is often 100–300ms. From a VPS in the same data centre as the broker, it can be about 2ms. This guide explains what those numbers mean, how they become slippage, and how to measure them yourself in MetaTrader.

Measured latency from Equinix HK1 to each broker

These are our own measurements, not vendor claims. Each figure is a ping from a live fxVPS instance in Equinix HK1 to that broker’s trading server. Only Ultima Markets and Vantage Markets run servers in Hong Kong, which is why only they reach about 2ms — the rest are hosted in Singapore or Tokyo and are honestly slower.

How these were measured

Measured with the MetaTrader 5 terminal ping to each broker’s live trading server, from an fxVPS Windows instance in Equinix HK1 (Kwai Chung, Hong Kong). Each figure is the median of repeated samples taken during London–New York overlap. Latency varies with network conditions, the account server you are assigned, and market volatility; these numbers are indicative, not guaranteed.

Latency is not the same as internet speed

A 1000Mbps fibre line can still be slow for trading. Speed is how much data you can move; latency is how long one small packet takes to arrive. An MT4/MT5 order is tiny. What matters is the round trip to the broker server — ping — not how fast you can download a video.

Three numbers get mixed up. Ping is the network trip. Execution time is ping plus the broker matching the order. Slippage is the price difference between the price you clicked and the price you got. High ping makes slippage more likely, especially when the market is moving.

How to measure latency in MT5

1. Open the terminal on the machine that will trade

Ping from your laptop is not the same as ping from the VPS. Measure where the EA will run.

2. Log in to the live (or demo) server you actually use

Brokers often have several servers. Latency to “Live 1” and “Live 3” can differ. Use the server name from your welcome email.

3. Read the ping in the bottom-right of the terminal

MT5 shows a connection bar and a ping in milliseconds. That is the live network delay to that server, not a marketing number.

4. Check again during a news release

Home broadband often jumps when everyone trades NFP or CPI. A colocated VPS usually stays flat because it never leaves the data centre.

When 2ms matters — and when it does not

If you hold trades for hours or days, 200ms rarely changes the result. If you scalp, run a fast EA, or trade the first seconds after news, that window is the whole trade. A VPS does not make a losing strategy profitable. It removes network delay from the result so the strategy is judged on its own logic.

Frequently asked questions

Is MT5 ping the same as order execution time?

No. Ping is the network trip. Execution also includes the broker matching the order. Low ping still helps because the order arrives earlier and is less likely to miss the quoted price.

Why is my home ping 20ms to Google but 200ms to my broker?

Google has edge caches in Hong Kong. Your broker’s matching engine is in one building. The useful number is ping to that building, not to a CDN.

Can I trust a provider that only says “low latency”?

Ask for a measured figure to your specific broker, taken from an MT4/MT5 terminal, with a disclaimer that it is not guaranteed. Generic “low latency” usually means the VPS has a fast NIC, not that it sits next to your broker.

Does a faster CPU reduce latency?

A high-frequency CPU (such as 5.7GHz) helps the terminal and EA calculate faster. It does not shorten the network path. Fix location first, then CPU and RAM.
