Why Scalping and News Trading Need a Low-Latency Forex VPS

Scalping and news trading live on small edges. If the average trade is 3–8 pips and home broadband adds 1–2 pips of slippage, the strategy is fighting the network, not the market. This guide shows when a VPS is required, what “low latency” must mean for scalpers, and how Hong Kong traders keep EAs online through NFP and CPI.
The arithmetic of a 5-pip scalp
A scalper who targets 5 pips and pays 1 pip of spread has 4 pips of room. If the order arrives 200ms late on a fast tape, the fill can easily be 1–2 pips worse. Two bad fills wipe the edge. A colocated VPS does not invent a new edge; it stops the network from taxing every trade.
News trading is the same problem at higher speed. Liquidity gaps around NFP, CPI and FOMC. Home ISPs congest at the same moment. The VPS path stays inside the data centre, so the spike is mostly price, not your last-mile broadband.
What scalpers should demand from a VPS
Measured latency to your broker
Not “low latency”. A number from an MT5 terminal to the live server you use — 2ms in Hong Kong, or an honest ~5–10ms to Singapore/Tokyo.
High-frequency CPU
Tick-level EAs and many charts need clock speed more than core count. A 5.7GHz boost clock keeps the terminal responsive when ticks burst.
Enough RAM per terminal
One terminal with several charts and an EA is about 1GB. A frozen terminal during news is worse than a slightly slower one.
Uptime during the event
Windows Update on a home PC during London or New York open is a classic way to miss the only trade that mattered that week.
Manual scalping vs EA scalping
Manual scalpers still benefit: the VPS is next to the broker, you RDP in, and clicks travel metres. EA scalpers need the VPS more, because the robot must stay online after you close the laptop. Copy-trading and signal following belong in the same bucket — the copier has to be awake when the signal fires.
When you can skip a VPS
Swing traders who enter a few times a week and set a stop at the broker do not need millisecond execution. The broker’s server holds the stop even if your PC is off. Buy a VPS when something on your side must stay running or when every fill quality matters.

Frequently asked questions
Will a VPS make my scalping EA profitable?
No. It improves fills and uptime. If the EA loses after costs on a 2ms connection, the logic is the problem, not the home router.
Is 5–10ms to a Singapore broker good enough for scalping?
For most human scalps and many EAs, yes — it is still 10–30× faster than home broadband. Tick-level HFT-style systems may want the VPS in the same city as that broker.
Should I trade news from a VPS or stay out?
A VPS reduces infrastructure risk. It does not remove gap risk, requotes or widened spreads. Many traders use the VPS so the EA can flatten or hedge automatically, not so they can click into the print.
How many terminals do I need for scalping plus a swing account?
One terminal per account is the clean setup. Lite (1–2) covers a scalp account plus a backup. Standard (3–5) if you split brokers or run a copier alongside.
