MT4/MT5 VPS Setup Tutorial — From Order to Running EA in 15 Minutes

This is the complete walkthrough for getting your MetaTrader terminal running on a VPS: ordering, connecting by Remote Desktop from any device, logging in to your broker, and attaching your EA so it trades 24/7. No technical background needed.
Step 1 — Order your VPS
Pick a plan based on how many terminals you'll run: Lite (1-2 terminals), Standard (3-5), or Pro (6-10). After payment, deployment is fully automatic — within 15 minutes you'll receive an email containing your VPS IP address, username, and password. That email is your key; keep it.
Step 2 — Connect with Remote Desktop (any device)
Your VPS is a Windows computer in our Hong Kong data centre. Remote Desktop (RDP) shows you its screen from wherever you are:
From Windows
Press Win+R, type mstsc, press Enter. Paste your VPS IP, click Connect, then enter the username and password from your email.
From Mac
Install the free "Windows App" from the Mac App Store (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop). Add a PC with your VPS IP, then connect with your credentials.
From iPhone / Android
Install "Windows App" (iOS) or "Remote Desktop" (Android) from the app store. Add your VPS IP and log in — full control of your terminals from your phone.
Step 3 — Log in to your broker in MT4/MT5
MT4 and MT5 are already installed on your fxVPS desktop. Open the terminal, go to File → Login to Trade Account, enter your account number and password, and select your broker's server from the dropdown (your broker's welcome email states the exact server name, e.g. a "Live" server). Charts start streaming immediately — thanks to colocation, price updates arrive in about 2ms for Hong Kong-based brokers.
Step 4 — Attach your EA and enable auto-trading
Copy your EA file (.ex4 / .ex5) into the terminal: File → Open Data Folder → MQL4/MQL5 → Experts, then restart the terminal. Drag the EA from the Navigator panel onto your chart, tick "Allow Algo Trading" in its settings, and make sure the Algo Trading button in the toolbar is green.
The EA's name and a smiley face (MT4) or the chart's top-right status (MT5) confirm it's live.
Step 5 — Disconnect (the right way)
Simply close the Remote Desktop window or click the X on the connection bar. Do NOT use Windows Start → Shut Down — that would power off the VPS and stop your terminals. Closing RDP just closes your view; the VPS and your EAs keep running. Reconnect any time to check in.

One terminal ≈ 1GB RAM
Keep chart count and indicators reasonable. If the terminal feels slow, close unused charts before upgrading plans.
Changed your RDP password?
You can change it any time from the fxVPS client portal — the VPS reboots automatically so the new password takes effect.
Rebooting is safe
MT4/MT5 can be set to relaunch on startup. After a reboot, reconnect and confirm your terminals and EAs are running.

Do I need to install MT4/MT5 myself?
No — both are pre-installed on every fxVPS. You only log in to your broker account.
Can I run terminals from two different brokers?
Yes. Each terminal connects to its own broker — for example one on Ultima Markets and one on Vantage. Your plan determines how many terminals run comfortably.
What happens to my EA if I close my laptop?
Nothing — the EA runs on the VPS, not your laptop. Closing RDP only closes your window into the VPS.
My broker's server isn't in the dropdown — what do I do?
Type the server name exactly as written in your broker's welcome email and press Enter — MT4/MT5 will scan for it. If it still doesn't appear, contact your broker to confirm the server name.
